Once a bastion of welding wizardry, Shop 26 was where molten metal met Navy ships. Perfect welds in impossible places (like hanging upside down inside a nuclear sub), set the welders of Shop 26 apart. It was also where thousands of “Wendy the Welders” first took up the torch. During WWII, these pioneering women became crucial craftspeople in the shipbuilding efforts on Mare Island.
