The shipfitters of Shop 11 were the steel backbone of shipbuilding at Mare Island. During the Island’s peak, they could cut, bend, and shape an entire submarine’s worth of steel—650 tons!—every week. Jeez. Somebody get these folks a beer. Or even better, name one in their honor? We’ll cheers to that.
WORKSHOP SERIES:
Mare Island, CA is a place where things are made. Brewed in limited batches – each beer in our WORKSHOP SERIES is an homage to 142 years of shipbuilding history, and the artisans and craftsmen that are currently writing the next chapter of this historic island.

the history behind the name
During WWII, Mare Island's shipfitters were fabricating a submarine's worth of steel—650 tons—a week.
The hand-painted Shop 11 banner can still be seen on the building on Mare Island today.
Inside the former Shop 11, now home to XKT Engineering. “Earl’s Hepburn” is in the background—a massive hydraulic press dating back to the shipyard days, still in-use today.
